Tax Credit 1098-T Form
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 includes a number of educational tax benefits that may have an impact on students and their families. The act requires the university to report information on students to the Internal Revenue Service. For additional information on the Hope Scholarship Tax Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit please refer to the IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education.
Information Returns
As required by law, UC Santa Barbara Division of Professional and Continuing Education (UCSB PaCE) will provide the IRS with information on students who have paid fees that qualify for the Lifetime Learning and Hope Scholarship Credits. Students who have consented in their PaCE Student Profile to electronic delivery of their 1098-T Form (printed copies are not available) will receive an email with detailed instructions on how to retrieve their 1098-T Form by February 1.
If you have not consented by the time the 1098-T Forms are issued (first week of February), you will not receive a 1098-T Form. You will need to first update your consent status in your Student Profile and then send us a request at help@professional.ucsb.edu to receive your 1098-T Form.
For Canadian students seeking University certification to support their eligibility for Canadian education tax credits. Please note that your 1098-T Form is UCSB PaCE's certification of enrollment. Canadian students can use their 1098-T Form in lieu of the Canada Revenue Agency's TL11A Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificate. Please consent to electronic delivery as described above if you want to receive your 1098-T Form.
UCSB PaCE cannot fill out the TL11A Form. This form requires us to certify that UCSB PaCE provides coursework that leads to a degree, but our department does not confer degrees. However we can complete a TL11D Form. If you need your TL11D Form completed, please first consent to electronic delivery as described above, then submit your TL11D Form to help@professional.ucsb.edu.

Social Security Numbers
Students are prompted for their Social Security number at the time of enrollment to ensure accurate reporting to the IRS. Social Security number disclosure is mandatory to be eligible for the tax credit.
The university is required by federal law to report your SSN and other pertinent information to the Internal Revenue Service pursuant to the reporting requirements imposed by the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997. The university also will use the SSN you provide to verify your identity. This notification is provided to you as required by the Federal Privacy Act of 1974.
If you find that you have recorded an incorrect number, please provide us with written notice of the correct number at help@professional.ucsb.edu. If you plan to seek tax deductions for educational expenses, we urge you to save your receipts.
