Job Search Strategies for International Students

Even as a PaCE student, you have access to critical University tools that can bridge the gap between study and work:

  • Handshake: This is your primary portal. UCSB PaCE students typically have access to Handshake. Filter your search for employers who are "Open to sponsoring" or have a history of hiring international students.
  • Career Fairs: UCSB hosts several quarterly career fairs (especially in Fall and Winter). Don't just attend; research the companies beforehand. Focus on mid-sized firms or tech companies in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area (like AppFolio, Procore, or Yardi) that are familiar with the F-1 OPT process.
  • The Alumni Network: Use LinkedIn to find former UCSB PaCE international students. Message them! Ask: "How did you navigate the transition from a certificate program to OPT?" Most are happy to pay it forward.

Remember that U.S. resumes differ significantly from those in other countries. Make sure to update your resume:

  • Directly Related: Your resume must explicitly show how your job duties relate to your area of study. If you studied Business, focus on business analytics or operations; if you studied Web Development, focus on your portfolio.
  • Address the "Work Authorization" Question: On your LinkedIn or at the end of your resume, you can include a small note: "Eligible for 12 months of work authorization (OPT) with no employer sponsorship required for the initial period." This clarifies to HR that they don't need to pay for a visa immediately.
